三方五湖のひとつ、水月湖の湖底から発見された「年縞(ねんこう)」。そこには7万年という気の遠くなるような年月の歴史が積もっているそう。いったいどのようなことなのでしょうか？

福井県の小浜から敦賀へ向かうルート上に見つけたのが、若狭町にある福井県年縞博物館。
名前を見ても、何の博物館かさっぱりわかりません。「年縞(ねんこう)」の博物館ということだと思いますが、伝統工芸か何かでしょうか？
実態はよくわかりませんが、写真から伝わるモダンな雰囲気が気になったので訪ねてみることにしました！
隣にある「若狭三方縄文博物館DOKIDOKI館」もとっても気になるスポットですが、残念ながら休館日でした。またいつの日にか。
年縞ってなんだろう
入館すると、まずは約180°にスクリーンが広がる年縞シアターへと案内されます。4分30秒の映像コンテンツを通して年縞について学ぶことができるので、知識ゼロでも大丈夫！
年縞というのは湖のそこに積もる泥の層。1年で約0.7mmそれが積み重なって縞模様を形成します。
三方五湖最大の水月湖の湖底で見つかった年縞は深さ45m。なんと7万年分途切れることなく積もっていたというのです。
まだよくわからないですが、なんだか凄いことは伝わってきました！
ステンドグラスによる展示
2階のメイン展示・水月湖年縞7万年ギャラリーには、そんな年縞の実物が展示されています。

年縞をどう展示すべきがというところで、見やすく保存ができるガラスという方法が採用されています。暗い色は暖かい季節、明るい色は寒い季節であるため、明暗セットで1年分。1年が0.7mmほどなので、この1本で500年分ほどの歴史が詰まっているのです。やばいですね。
年縞を辿っていきます。こういう年表的なものを見ると、この時代に何があったかとか考えたくなりますが、歴史知識が通じるのはせいぜい2000年ほど。数万年前となると、もはやなんだかわかりません。
その長さは本物通り45m。ゴールの7万年前は、現生人類ホモ・サピエンスがアフリカで誕生した頃。この年縞の7万年という歴史は、奇跡的に現生人類の歴史と一致しましたね！
湖底からの採掘方法
そもそも湖底に積もっている層をどのように取り出したのでしょうか。
その手法は、細い穴を深く開けていくボーリング。これによって年縞を湖底から取り出します。イメージはストローの口をふさいで水を取り出すような感じらしい。
1回につき取り出せるのは1m。年縞は45mなので、45回も作業を行ったってことですよね！慎重な作業をそんなに繰り返したのかと驚いたのですが、実際はもっとたくさん行われています。つなぎ目部分が崩れてしまうため、少しずつ位置をずらして年代を重複させ、なんと100回に分けて取り出したそう。
展示されていた年縞が1mずつに途切れていたこと、そして3本になっていたのは、そういった理由でした。
取り出した年縞は切り分け、凍結乾燥させます。その後エポキシ樹脂で固めた後、サンドペーパーで磨き上げてステンドグラスに挟んだそうです。
非常に繊細であったと想像できる作業。いったいどれくらい時間がかかったのか気になりますね。
1年毎に刻まれた世界のものさし
年縞に7万年の歴史が詰まっていることはわかったのですが、そこからいったい何がわかるのでしょうか。
年縞の凄いところは、様々なできごとを1年ごとに正確に年代を特定できるということ。通常の地層の測定では「数千年前くらい」というようなアバウトさがありましたが、年縞は1年毎に刻まれているため、様々な出来事をかなり正確に見ることができます。
例えば年功に含まれている花粉の中には、冷涼な気候で育つブナ、温暖湿潤な気候でよく育つスギ、現在見られないトウヒ、モミ、シラカバなども見つかります。これらの植物が生えていた正確な年がわかるのです。
植物からは、当時の気候も知ることができます。1万8000年前〜2万年前は氷期という寒い時代があり、およそ5000年前は暖かい時代があった、それを1年刻みで見ることができるというのが年縞のスゴイところなのです。
私のレベルが足りず深く理解できなかったのですが、考古学で活用されている「放射性炭素年代測定法」を補完する役割もあるそう。「世界のものさし」として、非常に重要なモノなのです。
水月湖の奇跡
気になるのは、なぜ水月湖でこれほどの年縞が形成されたのかということ。その答えは、ディスプレイの映像で知ることができました。
100万年前はまだ湖ではなく谷であった水月湖。70〜60万年前に断層活動があり、20〜15万年前には湿地に。さらなる断層活動で年縞ができる深さになったのが、およそ7万年前。
深い水深のおかげで湖底は風の影響を受けず、酸素が届かなくなります。そのため湖底に生き物がおらず、底がかき乱されることがなくなります。また、直接流れ込む大きな川がないため、大雨で水や石が流れ込むこともなく、静寂が保たれてきたというのが、年縞が形成された要因なのです。
なお、日本の年縞は水月湖だけではありません。網走湖(北海道)、藻琴湖(北海道)、小川原湖(青森県)、一ノ目潟(秋田県)、ミクリガ池(富山県)、深見ノ池(長野県)といった各地の池沼でも条件がそろっており、年縞がみつかっているそうです。
展示は多すぎず少なすぎずちょうど良いボリューム。内容ももわかりやすく、スタッフのおじさんも親切になんでも教えてくれて、とっても居心地の良いミュージアムでした。
今回初めて耳にした「年縞」という言葉。他とは異なり、1年毎に細かく歴史が刻まれているというスゴイ堆積物でした！
