230段の石段を登った先にあるのは、静かに鎮座する陵墓。ここは日本の近代化を推し進めた明治天皇の陵です。厳かな場所かと思いきや、穏やかな空気が流れており、人々の憩いの場となっていました。
明治天皇が眠る陵
観光客もほとんどおらず、静かな雰囲気の伏見区桃山町。かつて豊臣秀吉の築いた伏見城の本丸跡地に鎮座するのが伏見桃山陵。
陵は「みささぎ」と読み、天皇や皇后のお墓。ここは、明治天皇が眠る場所なのです。
若くして天皇に即位、幕末～明治という激動の時代を生き抜いた明治天皇。日本を近代国家へと導いたことはもちろん、質素倹約な生活を心がけ、民衆との接点を大切にする姿勢から多くの人々の信頼と尊敬を集めていました。
東京でその生涯を終えた明治天皇の陵がなぜ京都にあるのかというと、明治天皇の遺言に基づいているそう。京都生まれであった明治天皇は、最期は生まれ故郷で眠りたいという意思があったそうです。
迫力の大階段
陵へと続くのは巨大な石段。真正面に立って見ると、まるで壁のように立ちはだかります。
斜めから見ると、そこまで急勾配ではありません。地元の子どもたちが集まり、修行をしてました。
段数は230段。23段毎に踊り場があるので、休み休みいけばそれほど大変ではありません。明治天皇が教育勅語を下した明治23年10月にちなみ、23年×10月で230段となるようになっているという噂も。
登り切って振り返ると、伏見区内や宇治方面の景色が見渡せます。
上円下方墳の陵墓
階段を上った先は広いスペース。その奥に鎮座するのが伏見桃山陵。
木製の鳥居が3基連なる先に見える陵。陵形の全貌は見えませんが、上円下方墳であり、下方部の一辺は約60m。
この陵は天智天皇陵をモデルにしています。その理由は、仁徳天皇陵や応神天皇陵のような大規模な古墳では、明治天皇の質素倹約の精神に反するとされたためであるそう。（※仁徳天皇陵の墳丘長は約486m、応神天皇陵は約425mと、国内で1、2位の大きさを誇る古墳です）
陵墓に手を合わせて平和で豊かな国になったことへの感謝を思っていたら、涙がこぼれそうになりました。
昭憲皇太后陵
帰りは先ほどの階段ではなく、陵に向かって右側のスロープで降りていくことに。石段がきつい方は、こちらのルートがおすすめ。
下っていくと見えてくるのが昭憲皇太后伏見桃山東陵。陵形は明治天皇陵と同じく上円下方墳であるそう。
明治天皇の皇后である昭憲皇太后が眠る墓所。明治天皇を支え、良きパートナーであったという皇后さま。近代女子教育の振興や社会事業の発展に尽力し、明治天皇とともに大衆の支持を集めていました。
下っている途中、地元のおじいさんと少しだけおしゃべり。近くに住んでいる方で、ほぼ毎日ここに来ているそう。
京都の他の場所に比べるとここはいつも静かで、ときおりキツネやタヌキが現れることもあるそうです。そして、極稀に石段をヘビが登っていることもあるとのこと。230段の階段を上るヘビ、ぜひ見てみたいですね！
アクセスと参拝情報
大階段は京阪宇治線の「桃山南口」駅が最寄り。徒歩で5分ほどです。JR奈良線の「桃山」駅からは徒歩20分ほど。近鉄京都線の「桃山御陵前」 駅からは徒歩25分ほど。
近くには、明治天皇崩御の際、後を追った日露戦争の英雄である乃木希典(のぎまれすけ)を祀る乃木神社もあります。
